Leather appears on models far more often than one would expect. Belts, straps, pistol holsters, boots, ammo pouches, horse harnesses, book bindings and a saddle bag — all of that calls for a tone that keeps pace between the brown of wood and the brown of earth. It is precisely into that gap that this shade aims.
The character of the tone: it is a medium brown with a warm, slightly reddish foundation, of the kind that vegetable-tanned leather gives. It is not chocolate and it is not an ocher sand either, so on one model it will happily stand next to both.
Real leather never has a uniform surface. Folds wear to a sheen, edges lighten, seams and creases darken with soaked-in grease. It is exactly this unevenness that pays to imitate: apply the base, run a dark glaze into the crevices and bring back out only the raised places.
A trio of steps that works: a brown base in two thinner coats, then highlighting the edges by adding a little sand or beige to the same paint, and finally a sharp point of light where a strap would really rub against the gear. Leave the buckle strap and the metal eyelets until last, or you will foul them while shading.
It also suits: the wood of an older gunstock, cases and travel luggage, leather seats in a car interior, the worn handle of a tool or the brown fur on a figure of an animal. In such a role it also holds up as a middle tone to which a lighter and a darker shade are tuned.
