Summersea Blue stands in the maker's range right after the dark marine blue and is noticeably brighter and more open. It matches the color of water over a sandy bottom in midday light, that is the shade that looks almost untruthfully saturated in a holiday photograph. For a modeler it is at the same time the most usable blue for sky and water scenes, because it is neither garish nor faded.
A water diorama is built up with it in layers. The bottom is painted with a dark blue or green tone, the shallow with this shade, and the transition is washed out with a damp brush until the boundary disappears. Only then do a clear resin or a gel follow, which add gloss and volume. The paint is meanwhile applied beneath the surface of the water, not onto it.
Outside water scenes the shade suits a summer sky in the background of a display case, the blue features of civilian aircraft, swimming pools and parts of clothing that are to look washed and light. In combination with white a whole scale of pastel blues arises, with which an ice surface or snow-covered terrain in shadow can be shaded. Snow is not white; the lit areas are white and everything else moves in exactly these cold blue registers.
