ACRYLIC WASH — Deep Grey Wash (AMMO of Mig Jimenez)

An acrylic wash in a deep dark gray shade, a 15 ml bottle with a dropper cap, matte finish. This is modeling chemistry, not a kit — it is applied to a finished, painted model, and its job is to flow into engravings, seams and recesses, darken them, and give the surface depth and legible detail.

Acrylic Wash — What It Means in Practice

It is water-thinnable: thinned and wiped off with water or acrylic thinner, not mineral spirits. Thanks to that, it is odorless and has low toxicity — you can sit down to work with it at home without opening every window. It dries faster than an enamel wash.

Watch out for two things, though. An acrylic wash is harder to wipe off once dry than an enamel one, so you have less time to correct — wipe off the excess as you go, while it is still wet. And above all: the wash does not belong on an uncured acrylic coat, the water in it will disturb and smear the base paint. Let the base color cure fully, apply a gloss varnish, let it dry, and only wash onto the cured gloss. A smooth glossy surface also helps the wash flow exactly into the engravings instead of the flat area.

Which Color It Suits — and the Difference from Neutral Gray

The rule applies: a wash is chosen based on the model's base color. A dark wash on a light finish looks dirty and coarse, a light wash on a dark one disappears. Deep Grey is a deep dark gray — reach for it where you need stronger contrast than Neutral Grey Wash gives, but where pure black would already be too harsh. Typically modern aircraft in darker gray schemes, dark military and civilian equipment, and deep recesses (landing gear bays, engine compartments, panel seams), where the shadow really needs to drop down. Deep Grey therefore darkens and defines more; neutral gray is subdued by comparison and does not shift the tone at all. For a warm, earthy effect, reach for a dark brown wash; for general highlighting on medium and lighter colors, for a universal dark one.

Use

• Give it a thorough shake before use — without mixing, the wash will be weak.
• Apply with a brush, targeted into engravings, seams and shadows on a cured gloss varnish, not over a flat area.
• Let it act, until the wash flows into the recesses on its own.
• Wipe off the excess with a damp brush or cloth before it dries — with a dark shade, any unevenness in the wipe is especially visible.
• Build up contrast in layers, not in one heavy application.
