An autumn grassy airfield under a model

The field airfields of both world wars were ordinary meadows with worn strips, and in autumn with grass past flowering and with earth trodden bare where machines turned. This scenic mat reproduces such a surface in finished form straight away. A square area 245 millimeters on a side corresponds to one apron or a short section of a field track.

Properties of the material

The mat is used straight from the package and needs no painting. Anyone who wishes can fine-tune the surface with pigments, glazes or oilbrushers and shift it toward a drier or a muddier variant. The material can be cut with ordinary scissors, so the shape of a track, of wheel ruts or of an irregular edge of a meadow can be cut out. It can be fixed to a board and to a base with PVA glue. The surface will also take pigment rubbed in dry, which catches in the fibers of its own accord.

Which models it suits

• The scales stated as optimal are 1:48, 1:35 and 1:32.
• It will serve under an aircraft on an apron, under a vehicle and under a group of figures.
• On a larger scene, two areas are butted together and the joint is covered with a grass tuft.
• A cut edge can be bent downward, and the edge then does not look like a fresh cut.

The same format also comes in a spring, a dry summer, a steppe and a desert version, so a scene can be tuned to the season or to the theater the model belongs to. The autumn tuning has the advantage that faded grass does not compete with the color of the model, and light-colored aircraft stand out on it better than on saturated spring green.
