A scenic mat measuring 245 by 245 millimeters that imitates the spring grass of a field airstrip. It can be used as it is, or given extra color.
Responsibility details are not available.
Most aircraft of the First as well as the Second World War did not take off from concrete. They took off from a mown meadow, from a pasture or from a quickly prepared field, and that is exactly the surface this mat imitates. It captures the spring condition, when the grass is still low and uneven, soil shows through between the tufts and moisture sits in the ruts left by landing gear.
Size and scales. The area measures 245 by 245 millimeters. The texture of the surface is chosen so that it suits a fighter in 1:48 as well as a vehicle or figures in 1:35 and 1:32. For a larger bomber the area is not enough on its own, but it can be joined to another piece, because the edges can be trimmed with scissors into any shape.
Use. The quickest way is to put the model straight onto the mat and leave it at that. Anyone who wants to go further can tone the surface with pigments, glazes or oil pens and bring out the ruts, the oil stains under the engine and the paths worn toward the tail. A cut strip is attached to the board of a base with PVA glue (white glue) and the joint is hidden with a tuft of grass. It also suits an unpaved track beside a road or the edge of a field in a village scene.
What to watch out for. Moisture and pressure leave their mark on the surface, so a finished scene should not be left on a radiator or pressed down by a heavy model for any length of time. When cutting, move the scissors slowly and work in smaller sections, because a second cut is harder to hide. And before you put the aircraft down for good, try the turn of the wheels and the shadow of the propeller dry: at a field airstrip what makes the impression is above all the way the machine came in.
