About product

AK Synthetic Brush — Fan Shape

A fan-shaped brush made of synthetic bristles from the manufacturer AK interactive. It is a tool — not a kit and not a paint. The bristles are spread out in the ferrule into a fan shape — thin, wide and sparse, which does not lay down a continuous coat on a surface. That may sound like a drawback, but it is the whole point: a fan brush does not make a line, it makes a scattered, soft mark with no sharp edge. That is exactly what you need anywhere something should blend rather than stop abruptly.

Use

  • Blending and soft transitions: unifying two shades, softening a camouflage boundary, blending a filter or wash into nothing.
  • Working with pigments: scattering, spreading and sweeping excess dry pigment off a surface.
  • Dust, haze and dirtying a surface with a fine, indistinct veil of color.
  • Grass, foliage, tree canopies and background clouds on dioramas — the fan splits the mark into strands on its own.
  • Dry-brushing edges and protrusions — nearly dry bristles catch only the tops of the relief.
  • Drawing wood grain with oil paints, dragging across a still-wet coat.

What It Is Not Suitable For

A fan brush will not draw a line and will not give you a sharp detail — the bristles spread apart, so any attempt at a precise edge ends up smeared. It also does not suit covering an area with a rich, opaque color: a sparse fan will not lay down a continuous film, only streaks. For a line, reach for a liner; for detail, a small round brush; for an area, a flat brush.

Who It Is For

For modelers doing weathering and atmosphere — dust on running gear, burn stains around an exhaust, a snow drift, soft camouflage transitions. It is invaluable for diorama builders and anyone working with pigments. Synthetic bristles are more resilient than natural hair and, above all, withstand aggressive thinners far better, so you can trust them with enamel and lacquer products too. They will not survive dried paint left in the bristles, though.

Care: paint must not soak all the way to the ferrule — on a fan brush, dried bristles would stick together into a single clump and the fan would turn into an ordinary flat brush. Rinse it out right after use: acrylic with water, lacquer or enamel with the matching thinner. After washing, spread the bristles back into a fan and let them dry. Store it bristles up and never leave it standing in a jar of thinner.

FAQ

The spread, sparse bristles do not lay down a continuous coat, but a scattered mark with no sharp edge. That is why a fan brush is used for soft transitions, dust, haze and blending pigments — anywhere an effect should fade gradually rather than end at an edge.

No. The bristles spread apart, so a fan brush cannot make a precise line. Use a liner for long thin lines, and a small round brush for fine detail.

Yes, that is one of its typical uses. The bristles shed most of the paint onto paper, and on the model they then catch only the edges and raised areas of the relief.

Do not dip the brush all the way to the ferrule, rinse it with the matching thinner right after use, spread the wet bristles back into a fan, and let them dry. Store it bristles up, never standing in a jar.
