A dark gray shade carried under the designation RLM 66 Schwarzgrau, from the ATOM modeling range of the AMMO of Mig Jimenez brand. RLM 66 is a number from the German wartime standard of aircraft colors and belonged to the dark gray in which the interiors of German aircraft cockpits, instrument panels and canopy frames were painted. In the later part of the Second World War a modeler meets it on practically every German combat machine.
Above all on the cockpit interior: the seat, the side panels, the floor, the frame and the inside of the canopy. Because it is not a black but a dark gray, small detail in a cockpit stays legible once it is lit. It also serves as a dark base under lighter shades and anywhere a deep shadow is meant to appear on a model, that is, in landing gear wells or in the recesses of a fuselage.
Stir the container before work and apply the paint in thin coats with an airbrush or a brush. Use the thinner and the thinning ratio according to the manufacturer instructions for this range. In a closed cockpit the shade reads darker than it looks in the bottle, so it proves worthwhile to brighten the surfaces once dry with a dry brush in a lighter tone and to pick out the edges and the raised detail. A wash over such a dark base works only when it is markedly lighter than the color beneath it.
The model, thinner, brushes and airbrush are not included, unless stated otherwise.
