Varnishing, decals and shading together

The final phase of a build stands on chemistry that is not visible in itself but settles how a model turns out. This assortment joins eight preparations covering three such steps: the adjustment of gloss, the settling of decals and the bringing out of engraved details.

The varnish part is represented by Matt Varnish together with the media Glaze Medium and Matt Medium, with which paint can be thinned into a glaze without losing its adhesion. The decals are taken care of by Decal Fix and Decal Softener; one prepares the ground, the other softens the film so that it follows the rivets and panel lines. The shading is handled by three ready washes, namely Sepia Wash, Black Wash and Pale Grey Wash.

What the assortment deals with

• Evening the gloss out once several different shades have been used on a model
• Settling a decal on a divided surface without a silvery edge
• Bringing engraving, joints and rows of rivets out in shadow
• Thinning a covering paint into translucent coats

The sequence of work has a proven order. Onto a finished coat comes a smooth gloss layer, onto it the decals treated with both solutions, after drying the wash follows and only at the end the matte varnish, which evens the whole surface out. A light wash works on a dark ground and a dark one on a light ground, so the three shades will manage most of the usual camouflage schemes from desert to naval. All the preparations are water-based, the brushes are cleaned with water and the bottles can be combined with each other according to how strong a result you want.
