Bolted joints give away the scale of a model faster than almost anything else. In a kit they are suggested by a shallow relief which is largely lost once the paint is sprayed, and when the seams are sanded it disappears altogether. A separate part has a real shape: the head stands above the surface, a washer runs around it and the light breaks on its edge. On a motorcycle, where the frame and the engine are exposed and nothing hides under bodywork, the difference tells at first glance.
First sand the original relief flat. For an accurate position, drill a shallow recess which fixes the place for the part and prevents it from slipping. Pick the part up with fine-tipped tweezers or carry it on the moistened tip of a toothpick and fix it with a minute drop of cyanoacrylate glue applied on the tip of a wire at the place of installation. Wipe the surplus off immediately; once dry a flat stain is left around the head that is removed only with difficulty.
