The real subject

The G-2 and G-4 versions are among the early machines of the Gustav series, that is the form of the Bf 109 that still had a smooth engine cowling. Only the later versions received the conspicuous bulges over the weapons above the engine, because there was no longer room under the cowling for the heavier armament. Recognizing the machine by its nose is therefore easy, and a builder who wants a G-2 or G-4 to be recognizable at first glance needs parts that match exactly these versions.

What the set contains

Replacement gun barrels made by 3D printing, intended for a model of the Bf 109G-2 or G-4 in 1:72 scale. They replace the parts from the kit, which tend to have solid muzzles and thicker walls, because plastic will not hold a finer shape in such a small scale. The printed form allows a thinner wall and a clean outline, which is clearly noticeable on a part the eye goes to first. The exact number of pieces in the package and the kits the set is worked out for are given in the manufacturer's instructions.

Building and painting tips

• the printed parts are held on thin printing supports; cut them off with a sharp blade a little away from the part
• sand the mark left by the support down carefully, so as not to touch the shape of the barrel
• the material is not polystyrene, cement for plastic models will not hold on it, so use super glue
• wash and degrease the parts before painting, as residues of printing resin repel paint
• try the fit in the model dry, and only then glue
• set the barrels in line and parallel; the slightest deviation shows on the nose
