Brass Hammer

Brass Hammer from Model Craft is a small modeling hammer with a brass head; because the metal is softer, a blow does not leave an impression on the part as readily as steel does.

About product

Model Craft Brass Modeling Hammer

The Brass Hammer is a tool for the modeling bench, not part of a kit. The material of the head is what counts: brass is softer than hardened steel, so the blow carries into the part, yet the metal of the head gives a little itself on contact and the surface of the component takes the strike better. That is exactly what sets this tool apart from steel, watchmaker's and miniature hammers.

Use

  • seating metal pins, shafts and rivets into plastic and resin
  • fine tapping down and straightening of photo-etched parts on a hard surface
  • tapping a small chisel, a center punch or a scriber when marking out holes
  • situations where you need a controlled blow at low force and a steel head would be needlessly hard

Who it is for

For modelers who work with metal accessories, photo-etched sets, turned metal barrels and pins, and for anyone who builds dioramas or wooden models and needs a precisely measured blow. The hammer has its uses outside modeling as well, in watch or jewelry repair for instance.

When tapping, work on a firm surface and protect your eyes.

FAQ

Brass is the softer metal. Under a blow it is the head of the hammer rather than the surface of the part that deforms, so the risk of a dent in plastic, resin or thin photo-etch is smaller. For rough work on hard metal a steel hammer is the better choice.

This is a hammer with a brass head. Whether the manufacturer supplies interchangeable tips with it follows its own details for this package.

Yes, typically for tapping down a bend or straightening a part on a hard flat surface. Always support photo-etch on a smooth surface and tap briefly and lightly.
