Brass replacement refills for a scratch pen, 4 mm, 10 pieces, Model Craft

A package of ten replacement inserts of brass fibers with a diameter of 4 mm, intended for a scratch pen with a propelling mechanism. The pen works much like a mechanical pencil: the bundle of fibers is pushed out as needed and, as it wears down, it is pushed out further until the insert is used up. Then it is exchanged for a new one. This is therefore a consumable for a tool; the pen itself is sold separately and is not in this package.

Use

• Cleaning metal surfaces and removing corrosion on small parts where a large brush cannot be worked.
• Deburring edges after cutting and drilling, for example on photo-etched parts, wires and metal castings.
• Preparing a surface before gluing or soldering, where the oxide layer has to be got rid of.
• Matting and polishing small areas, cleaning contacts and tarnished metal fittings.
• Push only a short length of the bundle out. A long overhang spreads sideways and works less precisely.

Who the refills are for

For modelers who already have a scratch pen and are running out of inserts, and in general for work with metal, photo-etched parts and small mechanisms. Brass fibers suit places where you need to clean and prepare a surface rather than remove material in depth. The advantage of the pen over a brush is precision: you work only on the area where you actually want the fibers, and the surrounding detail is left untouched.

Use eye protection while working. Small fragments can come loose from the fibers and they must not get into the eyes or the skin. Wipe the work surface down after use, so that no sharp remains are left on it.
