Dried paint ruins a brush more reliably than wear does, so wash it out right after work: acrylics with water or a brush cleaner, enamels and lacquers with the matching thinner. Watch that the paint does not run down to the metal ferrule; it dries there and the bristles open out permanently. After washing, draw the bristles back into shape with your fingers and let the brush dry bristles upwards, not leaning on the bottom of a jar. For a dry brush set an older piece aside, as that technique wears the bristles down quickly.
