A loose colored powder from the AK interactive pigment range. Burnt umber is the classic dark brown pigment, cooler in cast than the rusty and sandy tones. On a model it is not for dusting whole areas: its strength is deepening shadows and imitating old, dried and repeatedly layered grime that lost any clear color long ago.
It gives the best results in recesses and corners: around rivets and welds, in the gaps between panels, under superstructures, in the corners of a cargo bed, around hinges and in the marks left by tools. It also works well on wooden parts, crates and cargo, where it imitates weathered wood, and on the underside of a hull as a base under lighter dust. Its second important role is as a mixer: a small share of umber will darken and warm a light pigment that is too garish.
The pigment is used at the very end of the build, on a model with a finished paint job, decals and dried washes, ideally over a matte varnish, on which the powder holds better. It is applied dry with a soft brush, worked into the texture, and the excess is tapped or blown off. Because it is a dark shade, add it in really small doses - dark pigment laid on too thickly looks like dirt rather than shadow.
This is a very fine powder: do not breathe it in, do not work in a draft and consider a respirator and eye protection. Keep out of the reach of children and always close the container tightly. The volume and the composition are given on the packaging.
