A crew of five carpenters in a ratio of 1:87. One is hammering, a second is sawing a board, a third is carrying lumber. The set is meant for a building site, a sawmill or a roof repair on a layout.
Responsibility details are not available.
An unfinished house is among the most rewarding scenes on a layout at all. A viewer fills in for himself what happened yesterday and what will happen tomorrow, and a finished building offers nothing of the kind. For a building under construction to work, though, somebody has to be working on it. Without people a building site looks abandoned and the scene turns into a ruin, which tends to be the exact opposite of what the builder was after.
The package holds five busy carpenters, each at a different job. One hammers nails, a second saws boards and another carries lumber, so together they cover the whole sequence of work from bringing the material in to fitting it. The poses are modeled in action, not at rest, which matters in a building scene: a figure leaning on a shovel can only be put into a model once, whereas working figures will take a larger number even in a small area.
The set does not have to be used all at once. Two carpenters will take care of a repair to the roof of a warehouse, another two will put up scaffolding at a depot building and a fifth will find a place at a sawmill or at a stack of boards. The impression of work is strengthened by a little untidiness around: offcuts, sawhorses, an overturned bucket. Beside the figures it pays to leave a piece of unworked lumber, because new boards have a different color from fitted wooden siding and the difference in shade shows at once which part of the building is fresh. A tarpaulin thrown over the unfinished part of the roof structure does the same service, because it gives away that the work is going to continue.
