A game of checkers over an old whiskey barrel in a ratio of 1:87. Four men, one with a pipe, and an old hunting dog resting with its tongue out.
Responsibility details are not available.
Two men sit at an old whiskey barrel playing checkers. One scratches his head and thinks over his next move, the other waits. A little way off a third man smokes a pipe and a fourth watches the game with his hands in his pockets. An old hunting dog belongs to the scene as well, having sunk to the ground and resting with its tongue out.
This is what amusement looked like in front of the porches of country stores all over North America. A barrel served as a table, crates as chairs, and a game stretched out over a whole afternoon. On a layout the set therefore belongs where things are meant to be quiet: in front of a general store, by the side wall of a warehouse, in the yard by a switchman's cabin or at the edge of a platform, where people wait for a connection.
What is valuable is that the figures do not have mechanical working poses. Scratching the head and hands in pockets are gestures the eye reads as a second of real life, and that sells a scene better than the best cast shovel. HO size, that is a ratio of 1:87, keeps the whole scene in step with the usual houses and cars.
The barrel and the board form the center of the composition, so the figures are best set out in an unclosed circle. A free side toward the viewer lets him look into the scene, and the dog lying in the foreground closes the scene off at the bottom without hiding what matters.
The whiskey barrel also gives away the period. Wooden barrels with steel hoops disappeared from yards and loading ramps gradually over the middle of the last century, so this scene suits a layout that places itself in the earlier decades and among buildings with wooden siding best.
