About product

AK Chipping Technique (ANGULAR) Brush — the angled brush for chipping

AK Chipping Technique (ANGULAR) Brush from the manufacturer AK Interactive is a synthetic brush with harder, irregular fibers, developed for creating flaked and scuffed paint. It differs from the round version in shape: the fibers are cut at an angle, so the brush has one longer point and one shorter side. That changes the character of the mark. Where a round brush prints the paint evenly in every direction, the angled cut gives a directed, drawn-out mark — the edge of the fibers can be run along a hem, a rim or a panel and the scuff then sits exactly where it should, with a sharper edge. An angled brush also gets into corners and up to edges more easily without touching the surrounding area.

How chipping works

Chipping imitates places where the paint has flaked off and bared the metal or the primer. An absolute minimum of paint is picked up on the brush — the excess is wiped on a paper towel until the brush leaves almost nothing behind. Then the paint is only dotted and printed onto places that would wear in reality: edges, the surroundings of hatches, handles, walkways, hinges and steps. Here the angled edge makes it possible to draw the wear along a line, not just to dot it.

Use

  • Directed, drawn-out scuffs along edges, hems and panel lines.
  • Wear in corners and at edges, where a round brush reaches less well.
  • Dotting and printing paint onto the exposed places of vehicles and equipment.
  • A companion to the round version — a different character of mark makes the result less monotonous.
  • Suggesting wear around hatches, handles, hinges and walkways.

Care of the brush and who it is for

It is intended for modelers who weather military vehicles, cars, aircraft and figures and want more control over the shape of a scuff. Do not let paint dry in the ferrule — wash the brush out right after work (acrylics with water, oil and lacquer paints with the matching thinner), do not dip it up to the ferrule and dry it lying flat or fibers down. You keep the angled cut by not forcing the fibers into the surface. Chipping is hard on the fibers and wear is normal with this type of brush.

Safety: thinners and cleaners tend to be flammable and irritant — work with ventilation, protect your skin and eyes and follow the paint maker's instructions. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

In the shape of the mark. The round one prints the paint evenly in every direction and makes scattered, spread-out wear. The angled one has a longer point and an edge that can be run along a hem or a panel — the wear is directed, drawn out and with a sharper edge.

Imitating flaked paint. A minimum of paint is picked up on the brush, the excess is wiped on paper and the rest is dotted and printed onto edges and exposed places where the paint would really wear away.

Yes. Alternating a round and an angled brush creates a more varied, less monotonous structure of chips — which is exactly what makes weathering believable.
