Conifer Green

Five young conifers

Young self-seeded spruce looks different from mature woodland. The trunk is short, the branches reach almost to the ground, and the crown has the shape of a regular cone that a tree keeps only up to a certain age. This set aims at exactly that kind of growth, so at a recently planted clearing, at the edge of a wood, or at slopes where conifers are only beginning to take hold.

Count and height

The package holds five pieces and they measure 6.35 to 10.1 cm, so two and a half to four inches. It is the lowest and at the same time the most numerous of the conifer packages here, and the two go together: lower trees occur in thickets in nature, so five pieces match the way they would really be planted.

How to space them out

Young growth grows irregularly and densely. The gaps can therefore be smaller than would be proper for mature trees, and they may quite happily touch at the branches. This works well on the boundary between a meadow and a wood, where self-seeded growth advances into open ground and the smallest pieces are farthest from the wood.

Planting

Every piece is finished, with nothing to glue or assemble. It is pushed into the terrain by the pin under the trunk, or it is fitted onto a base that can be taken off at any time. On low trees the base is practical when trying out the layout of a whole area as well, because it is easy to move them one at a time until the spacing is right.

The package holds neither terrain nor glue.

Filling out the scene

Under dense self-seeded growth the ground tends to be covered with needles and low bushes. It can be filled out with loose granulate in darker tones; without that, the area between the trunks looks empty and the trees hover above the terrain.
