A modeling paint in the Dark Earth shade from the Hataka Orange Line range. The brown earthy color of the upper surfaces of British aircraft of the Second World War.
Responsibility details are not available.
Dark Earth is a muted brown with an earthy cast, which the Royal Air Force introduced before the Second World War as one of the two colors for camouflaging the upper surfaces. Paired with a dark green it formed an asymmetric pattern with soft transitions, and it is exactly that combination by which Royal Air Force machines of the first war years are recognized at first glance. In the desert the same brown appeared in another pair, completed by a lighter sand shade.
It is used on the upper surfaces of British fighters and bombers from the beginning of the war and on machines operating in North Africa and the Middle East. On period schemes the boundary between the brown and the second camouflage color was sprayed softly, with no sharp divide, so it pays to work freehand or with a mask raised slightly above the surface. On a model the earthy brown is rewarding for later weathering too, because it takes both dust and the darkening of running grime.
Stir the bottle thoroughly before use, as settled pigment will otherwise shift the resulting shade. The thinner made for this range and the thinning ratio are given by the manufacturer on the packaging; follow those instructions and clean your tools with the same thinner right after work. Apply the paint in several thin coats rather than one heavy one, otherwise it will fill in the fine surface detail. Wash and degrease the model before painting. Let the sprayed coat cure thoroughly before you lay masking tape on it. Test the shade on a piece of scrap plastic, as brown colors look different under artificial light than in daylight.
The model, the thinner, brushes and airbrushes are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.
