Dark Mud is a solvent-based enamel effect in a 35 ml bottle from AK interactive. The shade matches dark, damp mud — that is, what settles lowest on real vehicles: on the running gear, the road wheels, the tracks, the inner faces of the fenders and the lower hull. It is not a finished model paint and not a kit, but modeling chemistry for the final weathering that turns a cleanly painted model into a machine that has really been somewhere.

Use

The pigment settles at the bottom of the bottle, so stir it thoroughly before use and during the work — otherwise you will apply clear thinner with no color in it.

• Apply it over a cured gloss clear coat. On smooth gloss the excess wipes off cleanly and without stains; on a matte or fresh coat the effect bites in and leaves streaks.
• Brush it into the places where mud would really collect: around bolts and rivets, into weld seams, into recesses, along lower edges and into the running gear area.
• Let it work for a while (typically a few minutes, until part of the thinner has flashed off) and wipe the excess away with a clean brush or a cloth moistened with a suitable thinner — for enamel products usually odorless thinner or mineral spirits. Work from the top down, in the direction of the run-off.
• Work in layers. Building the effect up gradually is always more convincing than one heavy application and it is easier to stop at the moment when it looks right.
• The effect can be combined with lighter earth tones and with pigments — real mud never has a single color.
