A low display block with a square footprint of 4 x 4 cm. Unlike shaped plinths it has neither profiled edges nor a tapered body. It is a clean geometric shape whose only job is to raise a model and bound it clearly.
A profiled plinth is a decoration in itself. With a model that carries a lot of detail, color transitions or pronounced weathering, however, the decoration beneath it clashes with what is above it. A smooth block switches that competition off and only the geometry remains: a horizontal line on which the model stands. This approach is often chosen with collector's figures and smaller busts, where all the attention is to be on the painting, and for presentations where a whole series is unified.
In a display case a block works differently from a tall plinth. It does not raise a model conspicuously, it only lifts it above the level of the shelf, so that a shadow arises between the model and the glass that separates the outline. When several blocks of the same size stand side by side, a rhythm arises and a collection looks ordered. In photography a simple shape is easy to take out of the composition: it is enough to let it merge with the lower part of the background and practically only the model is left in the shot.
