A stencil with a dragon scale motif in the larger L variant. It belongs among the universal masking aids, that is among those that are not cut to the outline of one model or tied to one scale. You can lay it anywhere you want to get a regular scale texture onto a surface, and you will use it on a figure just as on a flat part of a diorama.
The cleanest result comes from thin, well thinned paint and low pressure. Lay the stencil on a dry base coat, hold it or secure it along the edges with masking tape and spray in short bursts perpendicular to the surface. When you lead the stream of paint at an angle, it blows under the edge of the motif and the pattern softens. Occasionally that is desirable, on the contrary — a gentle blurring makes a scale look more three-dimensional than a sharp edge.
Scales stand out when you do not spray them in a single tone. First go over the whole area with a lighter shade, then shift the stencil a little and add a darker hint from one side only — an impression of shadow under the edge of a scale appears. A final light filter or wash then unifies the transitions and the pattern stops coming off as printed. Once you finish spraying, clean the stencil before the paint dries; a dried layer on the edges of the motif takes crispness away at the next use.
It is a masking aid, not a kit. Paints, an airbrush and masking tape are not included.
