A single drill bit of 1.7 mm diameter from the modeling range of the Japanese brand Mineshima. It is one of the sizes that are hardest to find: ordinary sets jump straight from 1.5 to 2 mm, so when you need a hole in between there is nothing for it but to tune it. The L10 series is graded in tenths of a millimeter, so you simply buy the intermediate step and drill the hole to size the first time.
At this diameter the bit already removes a noticeable amount of material, so work in two steps: a centering hole with a smaller bit first, then the final size. Drilling by hand has the advantage that you feel the resistance of the material and ease off in time; a powered micro drill is faster but easily tears the edge in a thin wall. When drilling into a part that is already finished and painted, tape the surrounding area over, so that any slip does not leave its mark on the paint.
For modelers who build military equipment, cars and dioramas and need holes that carry an axle, a pin or a tube. A pin vise or a micro drill with a sufficient clamping range is needed to go with the bit.
