Model Scene Dry turfs

Finished turfs in a dry color version. The growth has a straw to brownish coloring that matches grass at the close of summer, on sunlit field margins and in places where it has not rained for a long time. It is not a loose material and not a kit: a piece is taken, trimmed and glued onto prepared terrain.

What the vegetation looks like and where it fits

Withered growth has a different role in a diorama from fresh green. It tells the season and the climate at once and contrasts excellently with a dusty vehicle, a dusty track or a rutted lane. It suits south-facing slopes, the edges of fields, abandoned positions and the surroundings of dry ditches. Combining dry turfs with a few islands of green growth in the shade creates a balanced, credible surface.

Usage tips

Lay the growth only onto finished, painted and dusted terrain. Try the intended spot dry first, tear or cut the piece to an irregular shape as needed, since a sharp straight edge does not arise in nature. It is glued with PVA wood glue, and a drop of cyanoacrylate will serve for a firm hold on a hard substrate. Hide the transition between the growth and the surrounding soil with a sprinkled fine scatter, grit or pigment, so that the growth does not look like a glued-on carpet. You can match the coloring with a light overspray of heavily thinned paint from above or by dusting with pigment, always only very lightly and once dry. With dry turfs it pays to let bare ground show between the pieces: it is precisely the gaps with dust and grit that create the impression of parched terrain.

Who it is for

• dioramas from summer, autumn and dry climates
• scenes with a dusty track and a dusty vehicle
• modelers who want a finished surface without static grass
• vignettes for figures and railroad scenes

This is a scenery accessory for building a diorama, not a model kit. The base, the glue and any further materials are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
