Six shades for American naval aircraft from 1919 to 1943, including the yellow upper surface of the wing and the blue-gray of the first months of the war.
Responsibility details are not available.
Few eras of aircraft color are as photogenic as the US Navy between the wars. Polished metal fuselages, a garish yellow upper surface of the wing and the colored markings of squadrons gave way to gray within a single year, once the war in the Pacific began. This set of six captures that whole transformation.
Aluminium was the standard from 1919 to the end of 1940, at first only on fabric covering and from the middle of the thirties on metal parts as well. Light Grey to FS 36495 is given as the closest match to the prewar shade ANA 512, with which the metal parts of the machines were painted until roughly the middle of the thirties.
Insignia Orange Yellow stands for ANA 506 and belongs on the upper surface of the wing, where it was used as a conspicuous safety feature from 1925 to the end of 1940. Light Gull Grey to FS 36440 matches the shade ANA 602 and was overall from January 1941, and from October of the same year already only on the lower surfaces. Blue Grey to FS 35189 stands for ANA 603 and covered the upper surfaces from October 1941 to the beginning of 1943.
The sixth shade, European I Grey to FS 36081, is the closest match to the prewar ANA 513 and aims at engines and other individual elements. The paints are from a water-thinnable acrylic line and suit biplanes just as well as the early Wildcats and Dauntlesses.
The package also suits the places where the two periods meet. A number of airframes went from the yellow-and-metal look into gray only partly, and on photographs from the end of 1941 machines can be found with the upper surface already repainted while other parts still carried the previous form.
