United States infantry in the Vietnam War, 1:32 size. The figures wear a tropical field jacket, a bulletproof vest and magazine pouches.
Responsibility details are not available.
Ground fighting involving American units lasted in Vietnam from roughly the spring of 1965 to the withdrawal of the last combat battalions in 1973. The war had no continuous front: companies were moved by helicopter onto clearings in the middle of the jungle, searched villages, covered road convoys and dug into a perimeter defense in the evening. The way the figures are conceived matches that way of waging war.
A steel helmet with a cloth helmet cover and a wide rubber band, with cigarettes or a bottle of insect repellent usually tucked into it. A bulletproof vest across the chest, two canteens on the belt, magazine pouches and grenades hung by the ring. The legs are protected by canvas tropical boots with a perforated instep. A rifle with a short straight magazine stays at the figures' side even as they walk.
The figures suit models of helicopters, amphibious carriers and trucks, but they stand out on their own too, on a piece of soaked earth with bamboo. A humid setting invites work with gloss: drenched cloth, trousers muddy halfway up the calf and sweaty skin do more for a scene than the most careful painting of a camouflage pattern.
The set is in the 1:32 ratio, that is in the category of large figures, where shading even the folds of the sleeves makes sense. The number of figures is not stated in the name. The castings are supplied without paint and without bases, so the painting decides the final impression.
