About product

Alvis FV603 Saracen Mk.5 in 1:35 scale from Airfix

This kit from the British manufacturer Airfix in 1:35 scale covers the Alvis FV603 Saracen Mk.5 wheeled armored personnel carrier. It is an injection-molded plastic kit from new tooling containing 219 parts, instructions, a color painting guide sheet and decals for three marking schemes. The manufacturer rates it at skill level three, that is for modelers with experience, while the rich breakdown of parts also leaves room for detailing and weathering.

The real subject

The Saracen was a British wheeled armored personnel carrier with drive to all six wheels, developed in the postwar years by Alvis as part of a family of vehicles built on a common chassis. Its production was given priority because of the urgent situation in Malaya. The engine sat at the front, followed by the commander and radio operator compartment and, at the rear, the troop compartment: the vehicle was operated by a crew of two and carried up to ten soldiers seated in two rows facing each other along the armored sides. The Saracen made its name in policing and security duties rather than in classic tank battles: it patrolled the streets, where it became best known during the British presence in Northern Ireland, and it also served in the Middle East and with other users around the world.

Building and painting tips

Assemble and paint the running gear, the axles and the interior before you close the hull, because afterwards you will not reach them. Make sure all six wheels stand level; when gluing the chassis, stand the model on a flat surface and let it dry. Glue with a thin cement for plastic, fill the seams and sand them down. Apply a primer before painting and spray the main shade with an airbrush. Pick out the panel lines and rivets with a dark wash, drybrush the edges with a lighter shade and apply pigments for dust and mud effects to the wheels, wheel arches and the underside of the hull. Apply the decals over a gloss varnish with the help of a decal softener so that they settle into the details, and even the surface out with flat varnish at the end.

Airfix rates it at skill level three, so it is rather for modelers with experience. It is ordinary injection-molded plastic, but the number of parts and the detailing make the build longer.
