Three finished model trees from the German maker HEKI eighteen centimeters tall. Among trees the poplar is particular in that it grows tall and yet stays narrow, so its silhouette cannot be mistaken for another. On a layout this can be put to good use: a group of poplars can stretch a scene upwards optically without taking the area that an equally tall beech or oak would demand.

How to work with the trees

A tree is stuck into a pre-drilled hole or glued by the foot of the trunk. With a tall, slender shape stability is essential, so make the hole deeper and fix the trunk in it with a drop of glue. Poplars hardly ever occur on their own in a landscape; they were planted in avenues and by field boundaries, so place them one behind another at unequal intervals. Add grass under the crown so that the transition from the ground is not abrupt.
