Ten finished model conifers from the German maker HEKI, three to five centimeters tall. The larch is the exception among conifers: in autumn its needles turn yellow and drop, so it differs from a spruce or a fir not only in the shape of the crown but also in how it behaves in color through the year. In a small size these are young trees, suited to the background of a scene and to areas growing over.
The small trees are pushed into a prepared hole or glued by the foot of the trunk. Small pieces work best at the back, where the eye reads them as more distant trees. Arrange them irregularly and at uneven density. Spread the flattened branches carefully with your fingers after unpacking. Add a tuft of grass or a low bush at the foot so that the transition from the ground is not abrupt.

Ten small trees can be split among several places in the background, so that the depth of the scene shows across its whole width. They can be supplemented with taller larches of the same brand, and the growth then looks as though it is regenerating gradually. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
