HEKI gravel mat, 75 x 100 cm

This is not a model or a kit but a finished surface for building terrain. On a firm paper backing there is a dense scatter of fine, even grain, so that once glued down the mat looks like gravel, a packed dirt yard or a plowed field. The manufacturer lists it as an addition to the grass mats of the same line and states an area of 0.75 m². Because the grain is fine and regular, the mat is not tied to a single scale.

Use

• the base of a track bed, loading areas by industrial sidings, crossings and the surfaces between the rails
• field and forest roads, packed dirt yards, farmyards and unpaved areas by buildings
• agricultural areas that call for a brown texture without grass, for example a plowed field
• after cutting it is glued on a flat board like wallpaper with wallpaper, spray or general-purpose adhesive
• for broken terrain crumple the mat, unfold it and only then glue it down, and an irregular texture will stay behind
• the shade can be shifted with a diluted acrylic glaze, and the brown and ocher of the mat will make a dusty road

Who it is for

For modelers who need to cover a large area quickly and do not want to scatter all of it by hand. The 75 x 100 cm format is the smallest of the line and is enough for roads, yards and the surroundings of the track; whole layout areas are reckoned to need several pieces. It suits layouts as well as larger dioramas. Small things improve the result: loose ballast added between the rails, a darker wash in the wheel tracks and a few tufts of weeds along the edge.
