An injection-molded plastic kit of the Chinese KJ-200 airborne early warning and control aircraft in 1:144 scale from the Hobby Boss brand. The 1:144 scale is practical on large four-engined machines: the model fits into an ordinary display case and still keeps the overall silhouette, which on an aircraft of this type is the most interesting thing about it.
The KJ-200 is a Chinese special-purpose aircraft for surveillance of the airspace and for battle management, built on the airframe of the four-engined turboprop transport of the Y-8 and Y-9 line. It differs from machines with a rotating rotodome above the fuselage in that it carries its radar antenna in a longitudinal balance-beam fairing above the rear fuselage. The task of such an aircraft is to watch the airspace and the sea far beyond the reach of ground radars, to assess the situation and to direct its own aircraft; machines of this type serve with the People's Liberation Army Air Force and with naval aviation.
The seating of the antenna fairing is the key point. It has to sit symmetrically on the axis of the fuselage, otherwise the model looks twisted when seen head on. Leave the engine nacelles and the propellers for the end, so that they are not in the way while sanding. Fill and sand the wing and fuselage joints smooth, because light finishes emphasize every imperfection. Spray a gloss coat before the decals and knock the surface back once it has dried. At this scale the panel lines need only be suggested with a heavily thinned wash; a strong wash would visually break a small model up.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
