Lifebuoys for ship models, 1:144 scale

A set of three-dimensional elements that stand in for lifebuoys on a model. In 1:144 scale this is a very small detail, yet it is the one that shows something is going on aboard: the buoys hang on the railings, on the walls of the superstructures and by the ladders, that is in the places the eye goes first.

How a three-dimensional element differs

A flat decal looks like a sticker on a curved railing. An element with a raised relief has a thickness of its own and casts a shadow in side light, so the buoy reads as a separate object rather than as a drawing on the surface. On a ship model, which is looked at from above as well as from the side, that difference is clearly noticeable.

Before application

• Check the manufacturer's instructions to see how the elements are attached to the surface. The method of application differs between the individual sets.
• The surface must be finished, that is sprayed, cured and free of grease.
• Move the elements with soft-closing tweezers; do not touch parts this small with your fingers.
• Plan the placing in advance from a photograph of the real subject or from the kit instructions.
• Press down with a cotton swab so that the element adheres all the way round.

Who the set is for

For builders of ship models in 1:144 scale who are short of small deck fittings, and for diorama builders who add to a scene at the end of a build. The work is simple, but it calls for calm, good light and tweezers. The extent of the set and the recommended placing are given in the manufacturer's instructions.
