Floor tiles for dioramas in 1:16 scale. A paved surface carries the traces of use better than a smooth base and lends the scene believability.

Floor tiles for dioramas in 1:16 scale. Paving is a rewarding base above all because it carries the traces of use well on itself: greasy stains under an engine, wear in the place that is walked over most often, dust settled by a wall. In 1:16 scale a tile 20 cm along the side comes out at 12.5 mm and an adult figure at roughly 11 cm, so all these small things offer themselves to the view.
A new floor looks uninteresting on a scene; a worn one tells a story. Unevenness helps the most: a lighter strip where people walk, darker edges by the walls, small rubble in the corners. Apply the stains thinly, in layers and always only to part of the area, because an even soiling of the whole comes across just as artificially as a clean coat of paint. A few cracked or missing tiles with the base showing through beneath them suit it as well.
Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little distance from the part, sand the rest, and wash and degrease the surface before painting. Work from the base shade through a dark wash in the joints to a dry brush on the edges; leave the pigments until the end and fix them. Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; the specific procedure is given in the maker's instructions.
For builders of dioramas in 1:16 scale who want a scene with traces of use, not just a base. Paints, pigments and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
