This injection-molded plastic kit from MiniArt captures a small German wheeled tractor in the configuration for traffic and municipal service, designated after the postwar model year 1950. The 1:24 scale is ideal for this kind of vehicle: the machine stays big enough for the details of the engine, the wheels and the steering to show, but it does not take up as much room in a display case as a large vehicle does. Check the number of parts, the contents of the package and the scope of the decal sheet against the information on the box.
Small wheeled tractors of this class served in Germany after the Second World War in two ways: in the fields with farmers and at the same time as towing and handling machines in yards, at railway stations and in villages. The configuration for traffic service tended to be adapted for use on the road. The machines were simple, robust and long-lived, so they could still be met long after 1950, and that is exactly why they suit civilian dioramas and scenes with postwar vehicles so well.
In a larger scale every imperfection shows, so take care over cleaning up the mold seams and over thin coats of paint. Use thin cement for plastic applied with a brush, which runs into the seam by capillary action. Build and paint the engine and the chassis before you cover them with the bodywork. Primer comes before painting, best sprayed; the saturated paint of a tractor looks better in two thin coats than in one heavy one. The model deserves weathering: dust on the wheels, mud effects in the wheel arches, oil stains at the engine and chipped paint on the edges of the fenders and the steps. Apply the decals over a gloss surface and blend everything at the end with flat varnish.
