The Toyota Starlet KP61 was a light rear-wheel-drive hatchback which, thanks to its low weight and simple construction, became a popular basis for one-make circuit cups. In Japan the Starlet Grand Cup series ran, in which identically prepared cars faced each other and the outcome came down mainly to driving skill and preparation. Compared with the production car, the racing version received a modified chassis, a roll cage, a racing seat and other equipment.
