Cross masks for the Bf 110 C, D and E in 1:32

A set of masks for the national crosses on a model of the Bf 110 heavy fighter in the C, D and E versions, 1:32 scale. Instead of decals the markings are sprayed with paint, so no carrier film and no glossy edge of one is left on the surface.

Why spray the markings instead of using decals

A sprayed cross is part of the paint, not a layer above it. It will not lift away, will not ripple across rivets and will not shine at a different angle from the surrounding surface. In a large scale, where the marking is sizeable and the viewer examines it from close up, this difference is clearly noticeable. A sprayed marking also withstands later panel line accentuation and dusting without its edge getting lost underneath them.

The painting procedure

• Stick the mask onto a dry base coat, that is before spraying the marking itself.
• Wash and degrease the surface beforehand and press the edges of the mask down properly, so that paint does not creep under them.
• With a two-color marking, work from the light color to the dark one and let the surface dry properly between the coats.
• Spray thin coats; a heavy application creates a step at the edge of the mask which is hard to sand down after unmasking.
• Take the mask off once the paint has set, pulling at a shallow angle rather than perpendicularly upward.
