North American P-51D-5NA Mustang 1:32 (Revell)

A large injection-molded plastic model of the American fighter North American P-51D-5NA Mustang in the large 1:32 scale from Revell. It is a modern tooling with a finely executed surface and a detailed cockpit; the model offers movable control surfaces and decals for several historic Mustang finishes. Specifically it captures the early P-51D-5NA version with the teardrop canopy, still without the characteristic dorsal fin ahead of the rudder. Given its size and the number of parts it is a more demanding build for more experienced modelers.

The real subject

The P-51D was the ultimate and most widespread version of the famous North American Mustang fighter. It was powered by the Packard Merlin V12 engine (a license-built Rolls-Royce Merlin) and, thanks to its great range, escorted Allied bombers deep over enemy territory. Early machines of the D-5NA series had the teardrop canopy for a perfect view out, but still lacked the small dorsal fin that later Mustangs received to improve directional stability. The armament was six .50 caliber machine guns in the wings.

Building and painting tips

In the large 1:32 scale the details show, but so do any shortcomings, so fill and sand the joints of the fuselage and the wings carefully. It pays to paint and shade the cockpit and the engine section before closing them in. Glue the parts with modeling cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting and use an airbrush; the glossy natural metal typical of Mustang airframes calls for quality metal shades and fine accentuation of the panels.
