What the set contains

A drop tank of the 600 gallon size in the early pattern, together with a pylon to hang it from. There is one piece in the package. The 600 gallon figure corresponds to roughly two thousand two hundred and seventy liters, so this is a bulky tank which on a model in a large scale can change the whole silhouette of the machine. The name marks the early pattern with the word nestable, that is tanks shaped so that one can be slid inside another.

The real subject

The F-4 Phantom II is an American twin-engine combat aircraft with a crew of two which served in the US Navy and in the US Air Force and spread to a whole range of further countries. Drop tanks belong to it just as naturally as its armament: without them you will hardly ever meet a Phantom in photographs taken in service, and a model without stores therefore looks incomplete.

Building and painting

• Wash the parts in lukewarm water with a drop of detergent, degrease them and let them dry.
• Cut the excess material away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the surface level.
• Try the tank and pylon dry first and check that it hangs parallel to the fuselage axis.
• Secure the joint with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); on a larger mating surface a two-part glue helps.
• Paint the tank separately and attach it to the model last, because access to the underside of the fuselage is easier that way.
