An injection-molded plastic kit of the famous American dive bomber in 1:32 scale. The kit covers three closely related versions: the carrier-based SBD-3 and SBD-4 of the US Navy and the land-based US Army A-24A. The manufacturer is Trumpeter.
The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a carrier-based dive bomber with a Wright Cyclone radial engine and the characteristic perforated dive brakes that held the machine in a steady dive. The SBD-3 version received armor, self-sealing tanks and strengthened armament and is inseparably linked with the Battle of Midway in 1942. The SBD-4 brought mainly a change to the onboard electrical system and a different propeller. The army A-24A was the land-based equivalent of the SBD-4 without an arrestor hook, operated by the US Army Air Forces. The rear gunner handled a flexible weapon, while the pilot had fixed machine guns above the engine.
The perforated dive brakes are the visual signature of the type, so handle them with care when cleaning the parts up and do not clog the holes with putty or thick paint. The cockpit interior is long and in this scale a great deal of it shows, so finish it before closing the fuselage. Spray the blue-gray naval scheme or the olive army finish in thin coats, and then bring out the panel lines with a thin wash.
