A base is the last step that turns a finished model into an exhibited piece. It holds a figure or a piece of hardware firmly, so that they can be handled without the risk of breaking off a small part. At the same time it does the best thing that can be done for the work with no extra effort: it separates it from its surroundings and gives the eye a clear boundary where the model begins and ends. A collection set on bases of the same character reads as a whole, even when the models come from different manufacturers and from different years.

Choose a base somewhat larger than the footprint of the model, but not so large that the model shrinks in the open area. Anchor the model with a pin into a drilled hole; glue alone does not hold heavier pieces on a smooth surface. Finish the edges differently from the top surface, because a darker tone calms the edge visually and brings the model forward. Free the surface of dust before painting and apply the paint in thin coats so that the texture stays legible. If you are planning groundwork, leave room for it before you glue the model down for good.
