Austin armored cars were among the most widespread vehicles of their kind from the First World War. They were built in Britain on a modified passenger car chassis, and their most conspicuous feature was a pair of cylindrical turrets side by side on the roof of the body, each with its own machine gun. The arrangement made it possible to fire to both sides at once, but the vehicle was tall and unwieldy off the road. The third series brought a strengthened chassis, revised armor and a second driving position at the rear, which allowed the car to back out of a fight without turning around. The cars had solid wheels with tires and their cross-country ability stayed limited to made-up roads. After 1918 the surviving examples passed into the hands of a whole range of European users and served long after the war had ended.
Kits from this manufacturer tend to be broken down into a large number of small parts, so cut the parts off the sprues with a knife rather than with pliers and clean them up with a file. Finish the running gear and the interior of the body before you close it up, because once the roof is on you will not reach them. Leave the turrets able to rotate until you have finished painting. Unify the surface with a primer, spray the base shade with an airbrush and leave slight differences of light across the panels so that the vehicle does not look flat. Weathering suits this subject best when restrained: a dark wash in the engraved joints and around the rivets, fine chipping on the edges with a dry brush or a pencil, dust with pigments working up from the wheel arches. Pick out the rims and tires in a different shade, otherwise they will blend into the body.
