A plastic kit of the prehistoric Chasmosaurus in 1:35 scale from the popular Tamiya dinosaur diorama line. In the box you will find an adult and a juvenile, plus a diorama base with the tracks of both animals, a dead tree (it can be set upright or lying down), small fauna and a human figure for size comparison. The shape of the body and the texture of the skin follow the paleontological knowledge available. The parts fit together even without glue, which makes it a welcoming model for beginners and school projects, and yet it offers plenty of room for advanced painting.
Chasmosaurus was a herbivorous horned dinosaur (a ceratopsid) that lived in the Late Cretaceous, roughly 75 to 80 million years ago, in what is now North America. Its typical feature was the large bony frill behind the head; it probably served to intimidate rivals, for thermoregulation or for recognition between individuals. The beak-like mouth and powerful jaws were adapted for grazing low vegetation. It was a herd animal, and its skeletons are found in quantity in the Canadian province of Alberta.
Before painting, wash the parts free of any mold release residue and apply a thin primer so that the paint holds well. Build the skin up from a darker base, over which you bring out the scaly texture with drybrushing in a lighter tone; let a dark wash run into the folds and between the scales so that the relief stands out. Bring the diorama base alive with shades of earth, moss and dry grass. The real coloring of prehistoric animals is not known, so you have a free hand; muted earth tones tend to look realistic. Two versions of some limbs let you choose a different pose.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
