The package contains 30 chicken figures molded in injected plastic; the body is always a single part and the legs are separate. A color painting guide is included. Alongside military equipment MiniArt has long made exactly this kind of accessory, furniture, crockery, crates, fences and farm animals, and the chickens belong to that family as a full-fledged, seriously meant product.
A tank in the middle of an empty surface looks like a model. A tank in a farmyard with chickens wandering around it looks like a scene from real life, and that is exactly the point of a diorama. Animals, crockery, crates and a fence give a scene scale, context and a story: the viewer immediately sees how big the machine is, where it stands and what is going on there. These are the details people stop at. And it is not only aesthetics: chickens were absolutely everywhere in the European countryside, and much of the war took place exactly there, in yards, on village greens and at farms. The set suits wartime and civil scenes of the 20th century alike.
These are very small figures, so count on a patient hand, a sharp knife and a fine brush. Cut the parts off carefully (the tiny legs are easily lost as well as broken) and it is practical to stick the figures onto a skewer or a piece of strip and paint them held in the hand. What works best is a base coat of primer, then an acrylic base color, a fine wash to accent the feathers and a lighter shade dry-brushed onto the back and the wings. Make the beak and the comb contrasting. It helps to do every chicken a little differently, as a flock of completely identical birds looks artificial. When you place the figures into the scene, think about how chickens behave: they do not all look the same way and they like to keep near a wall, the manure heap and spilled grain.
The set is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
