Royal Model casts in resin the folding wire baskets with a geotextile liner that are filled on site with earth or gravel. The set serves to build a scene rather than to finish off a particular machine, and it suits anywhere a protected space has to be marked out quickly.
A folding gabion of this type originated as a flood-control device and the armies took to it only in the 1990s in the Balkans. Since then it has been one of the characteristic marks of forward bases in Iraq and Afghanistan: the baskets are unfolded, filled with a loader and within a few hours they stand as a wall that catches splinters, small-arms rounds and a blast wave. The perimeter of a camp, covers for posts, ammunition bays and partitions between accommodation containers are all built from them.
Wash the resin pieces first in lukewarm water with detergent, so that the release agent disappears from the surface, and join them with cyanoacrylate glue. Spray the primer in a sand or dusty gray tone according to the setting, darken the wire mesh and lighten the fill with a dry brush instead. Then set the finished piece so that it meets the ground, because sand and dust always pile up at the foot.
The parts arrive raw and unpainted, and the chemicals for finishing have to be obtained separately.
