An accessory for a diorama in the form of a set for gas welding, 1:35 scale. It belongs everywhere something is being repaired or taken apart in a scene: in a field workshop, with a repair crew, at a railroad depot and in the support area of a building site.

Why a welding set in particular

A real gas welding set rests on a pair of pressure cylinders from which hoses lead to the torch. In a scene it works as an intelligible prop: a viewer understands at once why a figure is kneeling by a vehicle and why tools are scattered around. On a small area it therefore does more than another model of a vehicle.

Building and painting tips

• Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the rest back, so that the surface detail is preserved.
• Choose the glue according to the material of the parts; ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin and metal, so use cyanoacrylate.
• Before painting, wash the parts, degrease them and let them dry.
• The color coding of the pressure cylinders differed by army and period; derive it from period photographs.
• You can replace the hoses with thin soft wire, which can be bent naturally down to the ground.
• Finally add a dark deposit in the recesses and traces of use, so that the set does not look new.
