An injection-molded plastic kit of the Soviet GAZ-AAA truck with an anti-aircraft mount carrying four Maxim machine guns, in 1:35 scale. It is a combination of a light off-road truck and an improvised anti-aircraft weapon, a subject that stands out in a display case among the usual tanks. The model combines the build of the chassis and the cab with a fairly fine mount, so it suits a modeler who already has some practice.
The GAZ-AAA was a three-axle truck with the rear two axles driven, derived from the two-axle GAZ-AA. The added axle raised the payload and the mobility over rough ground at the cost of greater weight and lower speed. The vehicle was built from the middle of the 1930s and served in a whole range of roles, from carrying cargo and troops to carrying special bodies. The anti-aircraft version carried a mount on the bed with four water-cooled Maxim machine guns of 7.62 mm caliber. The set had a high rate of fire and was used against low-flying targets as well as against infantry on the ground; its reach and its effect against armored aircraft were, however, limited.
Assemble and paint the chassis and the drive train before you fit the bed, because underneath it there is a row of details that could not otherwise be lit. Leave the machine gun mount to the end and align the barrels with their cooling jackets carefully, so that all four point the same way. It is a good idea to paint the cab and the bed separately. A single-color finish completed with heavy dusting is typical of Soviet vehicles, so dry pigments on the wheels, the fenders and the lower surfaces and a fine wash on the wooden parts of the bed pay off.
