German vehicles of that time carried several layers of marking at once. Alongside the national cross there were tactical signs distinguishing the branch of a unit, formation badges painted on the fenders or on the front of the hull, and vehicle numbers on the turret. From these symbols it is often possible to work out from a period photograph which unit a vehicle belonged to, and for a modeler they are therefore the key to a convincing build of one particular machine. Make your choice from a photograph of the subject and from the illustration on the packaging of the sheet.
Small markings are more sensitive to application than large areas. Seal the base with gloss clear, trim the design as close to the print as possible and soak it only briefly in warm water. Settle it with a soft brush, press the water out from under the film and add a softener so that the design presses onto the rivets and the edges. Once dry, go over it with matte clear; on a dusty vehicle it pays to tone the markings down lightly with pigment so that they do not read as freshly stuck on.
