About product

The real subject

Combat engineers were among the hardest-working soldiers in every army. They cleared obstacles, found and removed mines, improved fords, built crossings over ditches and, conversely, blew up whatever was meant to obstruct the enemy. Their work mostly took place kneeling or bent over, with their hands near the ground and their tools within reach, and it is exactly this that sets a figure of an engineer apart from an infantryman standing guard. It brings action into a diorama, because the viewer sees at once that something is happening.

What the figure represents

One German combat engineer from the later part of the Second World War in 1:35 scale, that is in the scale usual for models of ground vehicles and for dioramas. The figure comes into its own best in a scene that gives it work: at a dug-up road, at a barricade, at a damaged vehicle or at a bank where a crossing is being prepared.

  • A German combat engineer, the later part of the Second World War
  • 1:35 scale; it fits models of vehicles as well as dioramas
  • A rewarding figure for a working scene, not just a combat one
  • It goes well with infantry figures and with a vehicle crew

Building and painting tips

Cut away surplus material with a sharp blade a short distance from the part, sand the remainder and take the traces of manufacture off with a blade held flat. After washing and degreasing, apply a base color. With a working figure it pays to put effort into the lower part: the knees, the elbows and the boots belong to the ground, that is to dust and mud, and it is exactly this transition that ties the figure to the base of a diorama. Build the face up in layers from a darker undercoat to lighter ones and leave the eyes for last. Choose the shades according to the documentation for the period you are building. A final matte varnish unifies the sheen of the whole figure.

Who it is for

For builders of dioramas looking for a figure with a clear activity, and for modelers completing vehicles in 1:35 scale. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Through dust and mud on the knees, the elbows and the boots in the same shade as the terrain. The transition then looks natural.
