About product

Olive Drab Lustreless: AK Interactive acrylic paint, 17 ml

This is an acrylic modeling paint from the AFV range of the Spanish brand AK Interactive, supplied in a bottle of 17 ml. The shade matches the American olive drab in the lustreless form, that is the basic covering color of US armed forces vehicles, artillery and equipment. The word lustreless is part of the period American nomenclature and means precisely a flat surface with no sheen, since a military finish was meant to keep reflections down.

The paint is water-thinnable, odorless and free of aggressive solvents, with high pigmentation and good coverage. Olive drab is a rewarding but tricky shade: on large surfaces it quickly flattens the form, so it pays to work with modulation, spraying the base evenly, lightening the edges and upper surfaces gently and darkening the lower areas instead. Only then come the washes and the dust.

Use and thinning

  • The base finish on American vehicles, tractors, trailers and artillery.
  • Crates, jerrycans, helmets and soldiers' personal equipment.
  • Brush and airbrush alike; for the airbrush, thin with water or the maker's acrylic thinner.
  • An ideal base for color modulation, washes and dust pigments.

Who the paint is for

For anyone building American vehicles from the Second World War through the later decades, and also for modelers of the armies that took American vehicles over. Thanks to its flat surface it is at the same time a practical base for weathering, since a flat surface takes washes and pigments better than a glossy finish.

A water-based acrylic paint. Shake the bottle thoroughly before use and close it carefully afterward. Clean the airbrush and brushes immediately when the work is finished, before the paint dries. When spraying, work in a ventilated room and do not inhale the aerosol. Keep out of the reach of children and away from food.

FAQ

It is the period American term for a flat finish with no sheen. Military vehicles were painted exactly that way so that no reflections would appear. On the model, then, expect a flat surface.

Clean water or AK Interactive acrylic thinner. For the airbrush it is thinned roughly to the consistency of milk, while for a brush a few drops are usually enough. Do not mix it with lacquer or enamel thinners, as that is a different chemistry.

Yes, we recommend it. The surface is not glossy once dry, so a flat frame could appear around the decal. Go over the area with a gloss acrylic clear coat, apply the decals and even the finished model out with a flat coat at the end.

It handles both. The range is formulated so that once thinned it sprays reliably without clogging the nozzle, while it also spreads well with a brush on smaller areas and detail.
