Concrete anti-tank barriers in 1:35 scale from the Vallejo range of scenic accessories. They are meant to be built into the terrain of a diorama; the package contains no base, no hardware and no figures. There is also another Hockerhindernis set with a different designation; what each one contains is described on its packaging.
It is a continuous belt of concrete pyramids of graded height, sunk into a common foundation slab. Vehicles could not get across it by driving straight through and had to look for a way round, which the defenders used to concentrate fire on places chosen in advance. The belts usually ran through the landscape in long lines and followed the terrain, which is essential information for building a diorama: the obstacle should never look like an isolated island in the middle of open ground.
The most common mistake with repeating features is the cloning effect. If you paint all the blocks the same and set them in a perfect straight line, the eye recognizes a mass-produced item at once. A few small things help: a slightly different shade of concrete from piece to piece, a fine rotation of the individual segments, varying degrees of sinking into the terrain and unequal amounts of growth at the foot. Before painting, check the parting lines on the edges of the pyramids, as that is where they show most. The painting can be managed by a beginner, because concrete takes a lot of improvisation: a light base, a dark wash, a dry brush and finally dust and soil from the ground upward.
The set is supplied unpainted and without terrain. Paints, glue and grass are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
